Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What do you feed your chickens?
A. Our chickens are fed a ration consisting of certified organic grains (wheat, barley, field peas, wheat middlings, etc.) fish meal for protein, limestone for their egg shells, and a special vitamin trace mineral mix for poultry. They are never fed any corn or any soy.
Q. Where do you get your chickens? And what type of chickens are they?
A. We get our chicks when they are 1 day old from a hatchery called Hyline North America LLC. We raise a breed called Lohmann Browns.
Q. I don’t live near Montana and my local grocery stores don’t carry your eggs, is it possible to ship your eggs directly to me in the mail?
A. In short, no. The USDA requires eggs to be refrigerated when they are sold, and it is impractical to maintain a refrigerated state for an egg in the mail. If you’re located in a nearby state, you could contact one our distributors and see if it’s possible to deliver our eggs to one of your local stores.

Q. Has the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza affected your practices?
A. Yes, HPAI is carried by migratory fowl, and we live very close to wild bird refuges here in the Mission Valley. This valley has one of the highest cases of HPAI in Montana with several reported cases within 100 miles of us. Because of this, the state veterinary of Montana issued a warning to all poultry farmers in our area to prevent comingling between domestic and wild birds. We have kept our birds inside their barn for the duration of the epidemic, which has lasted much longer than other cases of HPAI have in the past. It breaks our hearts to limit the access of pasture to our hens, but to compensate, we recently installed an aviary system so our hens can practice their natural behaviors of flying, stretching their wings, and other forms of exercise indoors as much as possible.
